8th Grade/Middle School Math

Welcome to 8th Grade!

The 8th Grade is taught by Mr. Lozano. Mr. Joe is also Middle School Math and P.E. teacher, Student Council Advisor, Athletic Director, Coach, National Junior Honor Society Advisor, California Junior Scholarship Federation Advisor, Yearbook Advisor and has an active role as part of SPM’s Leadership Team and School Board. In addition Mr. Lozano is also a teacher leader for the Lumen Christi Academies Catholic and Mission Identity Committee and a teacher leader for Loyola Marymount University’s Innovation in Digital Education & Leadership (iDEAL) Institute through the LCA. Mr. Lozano is also an Athletic Director for the Diocese Catholic Youth Organization (CYO).

It is an ongoing tradition at SPM that the 8th Grade class is expected to be the role models of the school through their spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development. It through the commitment to excellence on and off campus that builds an everlasting community of faith filled children who are God-centered, socially aware citizens, effective communicators and lifelong learners

In the 8th Grade students use GreatMinds curricula such as Wit & Wisdom, which is a holistic curriculum that “features knowledge - building lessons and carefully curated selections of art and books that inspire a passion for reading and writing in students. ” - Great Minds. Students are expected to “learn, and eventually master, essential reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary.

Middle School Math (5th through 8th)

Eureka Math is a curriculum that helps to build the understanding that numbers should add up to more than just answers by making the connection of math being used in real life situations. Eureka Math is the most widely used mathematics curriculum in the United States. In correlation with the Common Core State Standards, students move from “Story of Units” to the “Story of Ratios” to prepare for the “Story of Functions” in high school. This is done through Number System, Geometry, Ratios and Proportions, Expressions and Equations, Statistics and Probability, and Functions standards.
